Housing / AccommodationsVancouver and its surrounding cities offer many possible choices for lodging for both the short term and long term. You have a variety of options to choose from. Some of these are: Hostels, Apartment suites, Basement suites (shared with a property owner) or Home-stay arrangements. In some Apartment properties, shared accommodations are also allowed. Most students commonly opt for Home-Stay arrangements or shared accommodation with another student in an apartment suite. Any of these options requires payment of rent, which can range from $600 - $900 depending on the location, size of the property and services provided as part of the rent. Whichever option you choose to opt for, it is most important that you have a clear understanding of what is required as part of the contract for you to stay in these places. These accommodations may be furnished (basic furniture and appliances are provided) or unfurnished (basic furniture and appliances not provided). You may also be required to enter into a rental contract called the “Lease” which may be for month-to-month rental or for a longer term of one year or more. You must discuss this with the Landlord who leases you the apartment prior to signing any contract. Home-Stay arrangements are popular with international students who prefer a home environment with the added benefit of living with a local Canadian family, where they would be able to experience Canadian culture and lifestyle first hand. Home-stay arrangements are also ideal for students who prefer to have some adult supervision and /or would like some help with enhancing their communication skills. Basic Home-stay service includes the use of a private bedroom to sleep, space for study, washroom facilities as well as the main meals, usually Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. The going market rate for Home-stay is about $700-$750 per month, inclusive of all meals.
