PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

This specialized program is designed exclusively for Eton College students, incorporating both general business language and concepts as well as industry-specific terminology for the tourism sector. The program emphasizes communication skills, with a strong focus on developing the business and academic vocabulary required for success in other Eton College programs. Students will have the opportunity to take two University of Cambridge ESOL practice exams—one to evaluate their competency at the beginning of the program and another to assess their proficiency in all four English language skills (Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking) before advancing to career or academic programs.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Upon successful completion of this program, the student will have reliably demonstrated the ability to:

  • Listen constructively in general business and tourism industry contexts and understand a variety of English accents.
  • Feel confident in reading and writing business messages and documents as well as academic essays.
  • Effectively read and summarize articles on general interest and industry-related subjects.
  • Discuss and analyze business issues topical within a variety of industries with confidence.
  • Apply the language and pronunciation at sound, word, and prosodic levels required for interactions with clients and colleagues.
  • Recognize issues related to tourism and hospitality sectors including the range of niche tourism and hospitality opportunities.
  • Understand many of the qualities of effective customer service and the value of retaining customer loyalty.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

To be eligible for admission, applicants must meet the following criteria:

1. Basic Admission Requirements

  • High School Completion: Applicants must have a high school diploma or an equivalent qualification.
  • Age Requirement: Minimum 19 years of age.
  • Mature Student Status*: Applicants who have not completed high school and are at least 19 years of age may apply as a mature student.

*Mature student status may be granted to applicants who are over 19 years old and have not completed high school or equivalent.
Applicants will be considered for admission based on the skills and experience they have acquired since leaving school.
The applicant is required to provide the most recent transcripts or proof of academic accomplishments, a resume or summary
of professional accomplishments, and two professional letters of recommendation. The applicant may be interviewed by the
Registrar’s or Academic office to further assess their suitability for admission to the program of study.

2. English Language Proficiency

Applicants must meet one of the following:

  • Minimum scores from accepted English tests (e.g., IELTS 5.5, TOEFL iBT 46, Duolingo 95, etc.).
  • Recent English proficiency test (within 2 years).
  • Proof of English-language education:
  • 2–3 years of secondary or post-secondary education completed in English in eligible countries.
  • International credentials must be recognized by WES, ICES, or IQAS.
