PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The primary emphasis in this course is the determination of net income for tax purposes. The course gives detailed attention to the components that make up this figure, including employment income, business and property income, and capital gains. Detailed attention is given to both the taxable income of individuals and tax payable for individuals.
While limited attention will be given to provincial income tax procedures, this course is largely concerned with federal income tax legislation.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will have demonstrated the ability to:
- Prepare a simple tax return for individual residents of Canada, and to use the knowledge you gain to solve problems relating to the taxation of individual resident and non-residents of Canada.
- Determine who is liable for taxation in Canada;
- Identify different sources of income and how they are taxed in the hands of an individual;
- Prepare an income tax return manually for an individual resident of Canada;
- Identify the administrative and enforcement policies of Canada Revenue Agency;
- Identify taxation issues and sources for research.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
To be eligible for admission, applicants must meet the following criteria:
1. Basic Admission Requirements
- High School Completion: Applicants must have a high school diploma or an equivalent qualification.
- Age Requirement: Minimum 19 years of age.
- Mature Student Status*: Applicants who have not completed high school and are at least 19 years of age, may apply as a mature student.
*Mature student status may be granted to applicants who are over 19 years old and have not completed high school or equivalent. The applicants will be considered for admission based on the skills and experience they have acquired since leaving school. The applicant is required to provide the most recent transcripts or proof of academic accomplishments, a resume or summary of professional accomplishments, and two professional letters of recommendation. The applicant may be interviewed by the Registrar’s or Academic office to further assess their suitability for admission to the program of study.
